Are Diet and Exercise Important to Mental Health?

Your short answer is a resounding yes. Now for the long answer.

The reason the question “are you dieting and exercising?” from your therapist is so annoying for sufferers of mental health conditions is that sometimes diet and exercise is billed as a solution to the disorder at times. This can lead to frustration when a person is putting in huge amounts of work in the gym and engaging in crippling diets, but their mental health conditions persist.

Over the years, we have seen a consistent formula to giving our patients the best shot at finally climbing out of heavy depression, crippling anxiety, or other mental health barriers. Patients that include a consistent form of diet control and exercise regimens typically have a higher probability of reporting less anxiety and/or depression. However, they are also likely engaging in other therapies such as yoga, medication therapy, community service, and more.

What we teach at Honu Medical is that there typically is no “magic bullet”. Diet and exercise are not a magic bullet. They are simply a piece of the proverbial puzzle of mental health. Diet and exercise are one of many factors that control biological processes. By improving our biological function we have a better shot at improving our psychological function.
